IE background image no-repeat issue

IE background image no-repeat issue

I am in need of a caring soul that could help me figure out this IE rendering problem.

When I go to this page IE 8 ignores the no-repeat in the background image and things start to get out of whack. Similar things happens with IE6 and IE7 as well.

Of course if you look at it on FF, Chrome, etc everything is nice and orderly.

I've already assigned a height to the background image using a span. Wouldn't that normally take care of it?

Any help that would point me to the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

if i use IE 9 set to I* Rendering engine, and inspect the page architecture using the devoper tools of IE 9, it shows a problem with the articles being nested on inside the other:

rather than each one at the same level:

viewing the page source, there are a couple things wrong i see:

1) an extra closing a tag:

<a href="/citypark">City Park</a>

2) single quotes around style attributes:
<span style='display: block; width: 96px; height: 96px; border: 4px solid #FAAF41; background-image: url(""); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center center;overflow: hidden;' />

should be:<span style="display: block; width: 96px; height: 96px; border: 4px solid #FAAF41; background-image: url(''); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-position: center center;overflow: hidden;" />
