Activation Concerns

I have serious concerns about your activation scheme.

Call me paranoid (I do come from Interakt/ADDT) but if WebAssist decided to close it's doors - every one of my extensions would stop working within a month.

I understand the "phone home" in order to activate, but the "phone home regularly" does not sit well with me. I am requesting that a new activation scheme be implemented, one that will assure my investments with your products will still work, even if you no longer exist.

Before anyone from WA chimes in with "we're not going anywhere" please don't say it! I've heard it before - twice! At least those older products still functioned when when the company's left town, so at least I still got to use them until the code became obsolete.

However if WA goes out of business tomorrow, all my current tools stop working within a month. That leaves me feeling uneasy!

Interesting point.

There does not seem to be a response from WA, or is it posted elsewhere.

Does WA have a fail-over plan in the event of this scenario?

the routine that connects to the webassist server connects to double check the number of activations, to make sure it is not being used on more than 2 computers.

if the connection cannot be made though, that part of the activation process is ignored, this is to allow for offline use.

in other words, the connection to our severs at start up is optional, if the connection cannot be made, then it is ignored.

the installed extensions would continue to function if they could not connect to our servers.

Jason,

I appreciate you jumping in with an answer, however that is not true (at least not with the experience I have).

I travel all the time, and often cannot get a connection to the internet. I have learned to log in and make sure I am validated before a trip, because I have been stung in the past.

It appears that a "phone home" MUST BE DONE within a 30 day window. Anthing beyond that length of time will results in an error that tells me I need to connect to the internet in order to validate! That is why I am so concerned. If Web Assist went out of business tomorrow none of us will have extensions that load within a month!

If I am mistaken, or if this is simply a setting, please let me know. I am only going from my own experience!

when the software is activated, the activation is based on the Physical address of the active network card at the time. if you disable the network card when traveling it will cause the activation to be invalid and require that you connect to the internet to reactivate.

There are those that have problems with the activation due =to a fire wall that prevents the connection to our servers. for those people, we can manually create a license.dat file. If there where a condition that required "phoning home" every 30 days, we would need to keep generating these license files for these people behind walls. That would mean I would be to busy generating license files all day to answer questions here ;)

neilo

That still means that we are virtually 'leasing' the extensions for as long as WA is in business.

I have brought this matter up a couple of times previously, and Ray has assured us that if the worst happened (WA ceases to trade) he would release the code/mechanism for activating the extensions to to owners of the extensions so that we could keep them activated without further WA input.

Jason: If I read what you are saying correctly, as long as the network card stays enabled (even if there is no internet present) the products will live indefinitely. Well - at least until that network card (or computer) dies and/or gets replaced :) I have to turn off the network card when flying - so that is likely why I have encountered some of those issues I was mentioning.

Neilo: It's nice to see a long time user has the same concerns I have - and that you have addressed it yourself. Web Assist handled the closure of the "subscription library" very gracefully so it does not surprise me to hear Ray has made a promise like that.
