random products listing

What's the best way to go about randomizing a section on my website of products.. kinda like what Amazon has, "Other items you may be interested in" but pull it from the same category the customer is viewing from. I don't want to use Order By Rand() because the database will be large..and you really can't pick it by category I don't believe.

Also, say I'm listing my content as below on my website.

Name of Item

and the current product doesn't have a description, how do I get the Price section to move up instead of having white space showing like this:

Name of Item

You will need to use ORDER BY rand() to return random results.

the currant category will be passed using a querystring variable, so you can use the querystring to limit results using a WHERE clause, you can also further reduce the number of records using the LIMiT clause:

SELECT * FROM products WHERE ProdCat = $_GET['catID'] ORDER BY rand() LIMIT 5

To prevent the white space if the description is blank, use an if statement to determine whether to display the description:

<?php if($row_recordsetName["Description"] != "") { ?>

Description: <?php echo $row_recordsetName["Description"]; ?>
