random products listing

What's the best way to go about randomizing a section on my website of products.. kinda like what Amazon has, "Other items you may be interested in" but pull it from the same category the customer is viewing from. I don't want to use Order By Rand() because the database will be large..and you really can't pick it by category I don't believe.

Also, say I'm listing my content as below on my website.

Name of Item
Author
Description
Price

and the current product doesn't have a description, how do I get the Price section to move up instead of having white space showing like this:

Name of Item
Author

Price

Thanks!
