Members area earning points/credits

Members area earning points/credits

I'm trying to build a feature just for a member's section of a site that allows the signed in member(s) to earn points/credits for various things they may do while visiting the site.
create a thread = x points
reply to a thread = x points
time spent on the site = x points

These are just a few examples. I have the following questions:
1. With what tools from W.A. can I use to accomplish this? (I have W.A. Super Suite)
2. Are there any scripts already popular for this kinda thing?
3. I'm sure Im not using the correct terminology for this, so if someone could give me some correct terms to use, I have no problem googling.

There's a few way to accomplish this but I am guessing since they will be starting threads and replying, you are referring to people that are "logged in" already. On the log in page, be sure that you set session variable with the user ID (there probably already is one).

Then you basically make the start new thread and reply buttons as triggers. When one of the triggers is pressed, you would use the DataAssist to update a single record where user Id = the session ID.

You could modify the update statement to look like this:

UPDATE points SET points = +5 WHERE userID = $sessionID";

This kind of statement would update the existing points column on the fly. Of course, you would have to add a points column on your user table. You could also create a completely separate points table and then store the user Id with each instance of points, but that would mean a great deal more work.

yea, im wondering would it be easier to try and hunt down some php/javascripts software that does this. Because I'm beginning to think it may be too much work and maybe even more work to debug, and probably even more work to try and deter/secure from cheating this point system... because more so than just x points for logging in or thread creations and replies, I think client wants to reward points for video uploads, image uploads, etc. by logged in members.
