recordset

Is there a way to make a recordset for my site without using dreamweaver? Because it wants me to set up a testing server on my computer, and i do not want to do that if possible.

That would (I believe) require a pretty good understanding of PHP/MySql code, along with the requirements for eCart in order to insert the correct recordsets and queries for each page that eCart generates.

At the very least, you would need to be able to configure a connection to a MySql database on your remote server in order to use the recordsets (as you wouldn't be able to do it on your local machine) with the ability to log into it remotely. Not all hosting providers allow this, although some will configure access for your PC's IP address if you contact and ask them.

HOWEVER - I strongly advise setting up a testing server on your machine, for both this and future use. It would be massively easier to do than create a fully functioning eCart site by hand coding anything.

If you are on a Windows PC, I recommend XAMPP for ease of installation, if you are on a MAC, then MAMP seems to be the one to use.

Check out some XAMPP installation instructions HERE

Everything neilo posted is spot on.

However, even if you did create the recordset by hand, it still would not work. Dreamweaver relies on the connection to the mysql server to get information about the database like Table Names, and Names for the columns.

This information is used when creating the binding panel. Without a connection to the database through the testing server, Dreamweaver cannot create the dynamic data bindings for the recordset columns that will be used in add to cart from recordset button. Without the dynamic bindings to the recordset columns, you cannot bind the cart columns to them.

All i want to do is upload the store to my test website and get it to work. Why won't dreamweaver let me make a recordset? This seams to be a key ingredient but dreamweaver won't let me make the recordset without making a test server on my computer. I have a test site though, so why can't i just upload the recordset to my test site?

recordset?

What does the record set do exactly? Can't i just get the information from mysql and then do all the calculations myself?

I refer the honourable gentleman to the answer I gave previously.

Catch 22. You can't create a recordset in Dreamwever without having a testing server installed and defined in your site definition. Without that, the options required to create and apply queries via recordset and applying bindings as and where they are required (and you would need to know where to hand code these in) would be greyed-out and inaccessible to you.

It's not just having the recordsets - there will be more than one - ( which is virtually a set of records based on querying your database) it is then knowing all the various permutations of how you query the records and applying that information correctly throughout the site.

Anyway, eCart will not work without a testing server, which is the short and brutal answer. The requirements were listed in the product page.

This is why WebAssist created a pre-built solution (PowerStore) so that you could avoid having to know about the coding.

If someone from WebAssist were to help you through coding this by hand, the support cost would run into thousands of dollars.

I still don't understand what you have against just installing a testing server on your machine.

I did it :)

Okay, it finally works. I was just getting frustrated, sorry bout that. :/ I just had to reinstall it twice. haha. okay, now that thats good, I just need to connect dreamweaver to the localhost on my machine then create the recordset?
