Return to Checkout Page is Wrong

Return to Checkout Page is Wrong

I am using (or trying to use) PayPal Express Checkout. If a transaction is canceled or otherwise fails for some reason and the user clicks a "return to checkout" link they are presented with the form to enter their credit card info, even though they should only be exposed to the PayPal Express Checkout option.

Screenshot 1 (attached) shows the transaction cancelled page with the "return to checkout" link

Screenshot 2 (attached) shows what is presented to the user when the "return to checkout" link is clicked.

The user should be presented with the option to checkout with PayPal or with a credit card. If they choose to cancel the checkout then they will be returned to the same checkout page they saw earlier. At this point the user can choose to checkout with PayPal or enter their credit card just like the first time through. If you the user looses the ability to checkout with a credit card after canceling the PayPal checkout this could be confusing to the user and leave them only with an option that they do not want.

If you do not want to offer the Direct Pay method then you can remove this part of the checkout and leave only the Express Checkout option available.

There is no option for direct pay. PS3 is configured to use PayPal Express Checkout Only (See screenshot 1 attached)

When user views their cart there is no option for "checkout" only an option for PayPal Express Checkout. (See screenshot 2 attached)

The error is that if they click the link they are presented to return to the checkout page, they are erroneously now presented with a checkout page which includes the direct pay option, for which there is no gateway. (See screeshot 3 attached)

Thanks for posting back with the details. I was able to check on this and verify what you are experiencing. The problem that the link on the pp_cancel page and possibly others is going to checkout.php. This page has the full checkout form on it. Normally the user would not be able to get to this page because the cart would only offer the Express Checkout option.

To ensure that the user goes back to the same place the initiated the checkout from you should update the <a href="checkout.php"> link on the pp_cancel page and point it to cart.php instead.

I'm logging this issue now, let us know if making the change to the link on the pp_cancel page works for you.

The same change also needs to be made on the "pp_checkout_failure.php" page.

check out problem

I am having the same problem. My paypal express checkout is not working for some reason and when I select the return to checkout option it sends me to a page with a direct pay option using a credit card. if I fill in all the information it will process the order and email a receipt. but of course no payment has been made. I need to know specific instructions on how to fix this. I am not a code writer. my site I am setting up is
www.jacobsfishinghole.com
Are there special instructions I need to follow to set up my paypal express. I entered my email and password on the setup in admin. then where it said signature I just typed in my name.
I am not a code writer but I do have Dreamweaver cs4 and I am trying to learn how to use it.
any help will be greatly appreciated.

As for why your PP Express Checkout is failing, take a look a this thread:

showthread.php?t=11083

And see if it describes what is happening to you.

As for the fix for the checkout page being wrong, Eric Mittman's description of what to do a few posts back is accurate. That is:

Update the <a href="checkout.php"> link on the pp_cancel.php [and the pp_checkout_failure.php] page[s] and point [them] to cart.php instead
