Upgrading to PHP 5 with 1&1 Hosting
This probably won't be much help to anyone who isn't a 1&1 customer...but for those who are, you can create a .htaccess file that tells the server to use PHP 5 as an easy way to upgrade.
Here's info on what you need to do:
With 1&1 Linux hosting packages you have the choice between PHP 4 and
PHP 5. By default Apache uses PHP 4 for .php extension.
If you want to upgrade/parse the PHP version on your account to version 5, simply follow these steps below.
1. Create a .htaccess file and place the following line in the body:
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
2. Upload the .htaccess file to the directory of your website.
This will tell Apache to use PHP 5 instead of PHP 4 for the extension .php in the
directory the .htaccess is placed and all sub-directories under it. With PowerGallery, simply upload this file to the root of your site, or the PowerGallery directory, and then try the Installation Wizard again.
Other hosting providers may do similar things for upgrading to PHP 5, but the process is probably not exactly the same as detailed here. If it doesn't work, check with your host to see what is wrong.
