Improving search from dataassist


I have a search page generated from data assist. It searches 'Open Issues' for one of my sites. Each issue can have several states, i.e. an Open Issue, can be one of the following:

Contact Made
Solution Provided

Where as 'Closed' can be one of the following:

'Non Problem'
'User Error'
'Solution Accepted'

The search page works great if i specify one of these (populated via select list), but i want to change the search so that the select list only shows 'Open' or 'Closed' but that the search actually searches for one OR any other from one of the lists above.

I hope that makes sense, any help appreciated.
