MM_ERROR:HTTP 500 Internal Server Error

From spending the better part of two hours on a fruitless internet search I can tell that this frustrates many.
It definitely seems to be something with a site setup but I cannot find an error. I can say that by creating a new 'Server' in Dreamweaver and moving my files into a subdirectory the error went away.
The pages work fine on the server. I will just use the subdirectory version as my testing server and continue to use the actual directory as my Live Server.
