How To Disable Default Formatting in HTML Editor

When you update a record in HTML Editor by default it adds the html formatting of a <p> paragraph which in turn screws up how the data looks when displayed in the public pages. Is there a way to disable this default so that the editor does not add in the <p> to the code?
