filter results

how would i create a few drop down boxes that could filter the results produced by dataassist?

so if you go to results page and see all products in database, i then want the user to have a drop down option that they can select i.e. data created and filter it out or by a town etc?

any help would be great, not sure if this is something that could be done with an e cart object as its simlar to searching for products on an ecommerce site when filtering except it is with other data.

many thanks

What you are proposing could be thought of as a search within a search so to speak.

You could have a page that has the results listed on it then have a select list to further filter the results. To make this work you would need to modify your DataAssist Search server behavior that is on the results page, you will want to add in another search criteria using the AND separator.

How you submit the info from the select list will determine how you specify the value for this new criteria, if you have the select list with a button next to it you could have the value submit from a form and use the posted value from the select list as the value in your new criteria.

So long as you do not trigger the Search Server behavior again it will use the last submitted search query along with this new value to further filter the results.

Please post back with any specific questions that you have about this and we will help with what we can.

thanks Eric, i think i know what you mean:

have a field that has a value in it of say city (drop downlist)then once that is selected have a button with update results on it which would refresh the page with the results criteria.

as same as elizabeths comments, how would you achieve this behaviour and what would the code be on the update button?

many thanks again for your help

The process for making a new search on the results page is slightly custom so the exact code needed will differ based on the implementation. Here is some general steps though.

You can start by adding in a new form on the results page. In this form you will create hidden form elements to hold the values that were submitted from the original search form. You would then add in your select list to this form. If you use the same submit button as the original search form then you will not need to alter the trigger of the currently applied search.

Once the form is on the page you will want to modify your DataAssist Search server behavior to make use of the new select list you have on the page. If you set it up like this the new search form should work just like your original search form but it will include the select list also. If you have all of the form elements from your original search form in place with their values set to the posted values from the first search form then the search will work the same but with the new values.

Please post back with any questions that you have about any of these steps and I will be glad to help you out with whatever I can.

hi eric,

i have been having a try at your instructions however i am looking to use a filter style seach using data assist search behaviour to filter my recordset.

so for example the user is presented with a page that currently has a date range on it. i need to be able to click an update button to then display the results below on the page.

i then need to filter from their based on 3 columns from that recordset. (if it is paid or not etc)

is there anyway i could send you what i have and try to impliment this using data assist search?

i would prefer if i could mail you or use a ticket as i do not want the clients source code made public.

thanks again eric for your help

Before we go into the code to try and make things work please describe what you have currently setup and how it is working for you. We should only need to go into the code if there is an issue that cannot be resolved otherwise. Adding the search server behavior to your results page should be something that is done directly through the server behavior interfaces. Please describe what you have done and what the current result is.

thanks eric,

wel basically at this stage all i have this form and the recordset on the page.

i am not sure how to then filter this recordset using the form as per your instructions below.

i am not sure if i need to do anything different with a recordset??

thanks again

The instructions are meant to get a search form onto the results page. This means that you should have already functioning search and results pages. Is this the case? If not you can create these pages with the DataAssist wizard.

Once you have the search and results pages created you can then edit the results page to include a search form. So that we don't get the process confused please make sure that you have the functioning search and results pages, then create a new thread and post specifics about how you would like it updated.

Thanks eric,

what i have is no search page currently.

I have my results page which i created outwith data assist. i created a recordset and used data assist repeat table to display.

what i want to do is have a form at top of the page which can then filter the results of the recordset within the repeat table on the page.

so if a user selects every client based in USA he clicks the drop down then click search and it displays the clients below in the repeating table.

can you help me impliment this as i have no idea how to get this working??

many thanks
