Alan Winthrop

text problem on preview in browser.

Hello,
I use SiteAssist for templates and MenuWriter latest download.
Adobe Dreamweaver CS3
Working on XP.
Internet Explorer 8.0.600 updated.

I have had an ongoing problem with MenuWriter
glow menu display and some others. It has occured repeatedly on and off since
installing. The only way I have solved the problem is by using
Go-back...but reverting my drive has not been practical for moving on.

I can create a new menu, either horizontal or vertical within template.
I can edit it in Menuwriter. Then save it and update site.
On exploring a page the menu displays in full, perfectly.

However when I go Preview in Browser, eg index page, the menu displays as text.
This happens in every page.
This happens now with every menu I insert into templates.

The code of index page, above head, is displayed as below.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><!-- InstanceBegin template="/Templates/siteassistpro_template.dwt" codeOutsideHTMLIsLocked="false" -->
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
<!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="doctitle" -->
<title>Products</title>
<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
<style type="text/css" media="all">
<!--
@import url("siteassistpro_css/content.css");

I have unistalled/reinstalled Menuwriter, deleted WinFileCache.dat file
a number of times but it has no effect.

Sorry I cannot use another browser to view my site as standalone PC here.

Your assistance is much appreciated, as the other answers on this forum
do not seem to have helped me.

With best regards
Alan

Sounds to me like you do not have a testing server installed or running properly.

When you go to preview in browser, what is the URL in the address bar?

The preview in browser option uses the settings from the testing serer tab of the site definition, if these are not set properly, the preview in browser option will not function.

Hello Jason,
Thank you for your assistance and help.

I am building my website on a stand alone PC, I have not got a remote site set up as a testing server.

I build my sites as a local site then upload them when fully functional. For that I need to have them working properly in my browser as 'preview in browser' function of Dreamweaver CS3.
I am afraid I do not want to go down the route of setting up a remote testing server.

So my url relates back to the local site, on my PC

C:\Documents and Settings\Alan Winthrop\My Documents\MyWebs\triplantanol09\index.html

Then you will need to set up a local testing server. We have a tutorial on how to set up the local testing server here:
xampp_for_windows.php

Jason,

I have followed your suggestion and installed XAMPP for local testing and made a new site from the beginning. I did not realise new sites have to build with XAMPP already installed.
However I still cannot get any menu functionality to Preview in Browser on CS3 now.
Is there any way to achieve this when XAMPP is installed?

I find the bombardment of messages in XAMPP 'challenging', confusing and time consuming.

I have never had any webdesign tuititon and completely self taught for CS3. My website are for my own businesses which is nothing to do with web design. I fear the above to be too time consuming.

As a result I have remade my site again..without any local testing server. This time the menus and preview in browser work as they should do.

There must have been some bug in the css code here.

Thank you for your assistance.
With regards
Alan
