Update a hidden field/ reformat table

Using SecurityAssist and DataAssist I've created registration, profile, update, etc. pages.
I've a database field "modified_date" which I would like updated automatically with the current date whenever a record is entered/modified. I've made it a hidden field on the forms. My question is where do I place the code to set the field to the current date so that when the form is submitted the "modified_date" field is updated?

A second question involves the results page generated by DataAssist. The results table is horizontal and extends beyond the boundaries of the page. It would be more helpful if the table could be made vertical with results extending down the page. It seems this should be simple to fix but I'm lost . . .
