Hosting company PHP query

I purchased PowerGallery last week and have just tried to install it. It came back with an error saying that PHP version is 4.49, and that PHP 5 or greater is required. However, my Hosting company (POBox.co.uk) say that they do have version 5 installed - but asked a further question (which I do not undrstand): do you know if the register globals needs to be on or off for your account (or doesn't it matter)? Can you answer this? Or shed light on how to solve the pr blem. Thanks.

Follow the instructions here:
230/

to create phpinfo. This will tell you what version is available to your site. Ask your hosting company why phpinfo doesn't show PHP 5 (if it doesn't). That will put the ball back into their court.

Register globals shouldn't be an issue.

Some hosting companies offer PHP4 and PHP5 support. Yours seems to default to PHP4. Your host should be able to enable PHP5 or give you instructions on how to do so. And yes, register globals is not used (and really shouldn't ever be relied upon).

Upgrading to PHP 5 with 1&1 Hosting

This probably won't be much help to anyone who isn't a 1&1 customer...but for those who are, you can create a .htaccess file that tells the server to use PHP 5 as an easy way to upgrade.

Here's info on what you need to do:

With 1&1 Linux hosting packages you have the choice between PHP 4 and
PHP 5. By default Apache uses PHP 4 for .php extension.

If you want to upgrade/parse the PHP version on your account to version 5, simply follow these steps below.

1. Create a .htaccess file and place the following line in the body:
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

2. Upload the .htaccess file to the directory of your website.
This will tell Apache to use PHP 5 instead of PHP 4 for the extension .php in the
directory the .htaccess is placed and all sub-directories under it. With PowerGallery, simply upload this file to the root of your site, or the PowerGallery directory, and then try the Installation Wizard again.

Other hosting providers may do similar things for upgrading to PHP 5, but the process is probably not exactly the same as detailed here. If it doesn't work, check with your host to see what is wrong.
