New to mySQL & Data Assist cannot access MySQL - help please

I have never used/created a database and am trying to learn MySQL by using the DataBase Starter Kit PHP. My issue is extremely basic. I cannot get the programs (not the swf files) but the actual MySQL programs to open because I do not have userid/password info. I tried to set up a new connection for myself but get Error code 2003 "Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061). Can anyone provide this basic assistance?

Thank you.

Have you installed MySQL server successfully? Did you run the MySQL instance config wizard? This is the utility you should run immediately after installing MySQL on a pc to configure it. In here is where you set the root password. The default user for MySQL should always be root, and whatever you enter for the password should be the password for the root user.

If you did not create a password you may want to try leaving it blank with the root username to see if that gets you in. Also you may want to check to see if you have a firewall or other security software that is blocking the port, I think the default port is 3306.

Suggestion

Eric,

Would it be possible to provide dhulbert with your "Web Development: Before you begin" (web_dev_begin.pdf) PDF?

Is this a free one, or is it part of a package? (I can't remember!)

It's a very informative guide, and I think it might be very useful in such scenarios.

Sorry Eric, ignore that. (I found it - and yes, it is free!)

dhulbert,

There is a free pdf that lays out the steps necessary to prepare the way for what you are doing. It's at:
web_dev_begin.pdf

And another free one about setting up your mySql database at:
importing_sql.pdf

You may already have seen these, - always worth another look.

ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement Error

I found the config wizard. Here's the error I am getting now:

ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement (Warning)
Messages
ASP.Net Version Registration Requirement

Failed to find the ASP.Net Version Registration with Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).

Any advice?

In your Dreamweaver 'Manage Sites' > Site > Edit > Testing Server - what have got for the 'Server Model'? Have you set up for PHP or ASP?

Also, what happens when you type:

localhost/

into your browser address bar? Do you get the standard IIS welcome (?) page?
