RetVal Coldfusion error

I had successfully implemented a coldfusion ecart implementation/solution and went through several sandbox tests and everything seemed to work fine. Suddenly I've gotten the following error from coldfusion:

Complex object types cannot be converted to simple values.
The expression has requested a variable or an intermediate expression result as a simple value, however, the result cannot be converted to a simple value. Simple values are strings, numbers, boolean values, and date/time values. Queries, arrays, and COM objects are examples of complex values.

The most likely cause of the error is that you are trying to use a complex value as a simple one. For example, you might be trying to use a query variable in a <CFIF> tag. This was possible in ColdFusion 2.0 but creates an error in later versions.

The error occurred in C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\NewEvents\WA_eCart\Adv_CO_Scripts\PP_DirectPayment_CF.cfm: line 293
Called from C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\NewEvents\confirm1.cfm: line 271
Called from C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\NewEvents\confirm1.cfm: line 267
Called from C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\NewEvents\confirm1.cfm: line 1

291 : </cfif>
292 : </cfif>
293 : <cfset retVal = Trim(retVal)>
294 : <cfreturn retVal>
295 : </cffunction>

Can anyone help, I don't see anything in the forums on this.

I'll need to examine your cofirm1.cfm file to look into the issue. I have created a support ticket so that you can send this file to me privately, to view and edit your support ticket, log into your support history:

I have an error as listed below, I saw many references to errors like this but could not resolve. Please help.

Please compress you frm_program.cfm and index.cfm files into a zip archive and attach them to your response sop I can take a look at the code.
