The select menu will update as well as retain the existing record but it is not displaying the selected state as initial value.
I would like to display the state from the db table IF the user has entered their state and if not, show select state.

Is that possible?

This is not displaying an initial value
<select name="fldstate" class="select edd-select" id="fldstate" title="<?php echo($WADAtbl_directorylistings_update->getColumnVal("fldstate")); ?>">
<option value="<?php echo((isset($_GET["invalid"])?ValidatedField("userupdate","fldstate"):"".$WADAtbl_directorylistings_update->getColumnVal("fldstate") ."")); ?>" selected="<?php echo($WADAtbl_directorylistings_update->getColumnVal("fldstate")); ?>">
</option>

This also did not display an initial value
<label>State / Province</label>
<select name="fldstate" id="fldstate" class="select edd-select">
<option value="<?php echo((isset($_GET["invalid"])?ValidatedField("userupdate","fldstate"):"".$WADAtbl_directorylistings_update->getColumnVal("fldstate") ."")); ?>" selected="<?php echo((isset($_GET["invalid"])?ValidatedField("userupdate","fldstate"):"".$WADAtbl_directorylistings_update->getColumnVal("fldstate") ."")); ?>"></option>
<option value="AL">Alabama</option>
<option value="AK">Alaska</option>
<option value="AZ">Arizona</option>
</select>

Go to the properties window in Dreamweaver and click the "Dynamic" button. Then, where it says "select value equal to:" enter the value:

<?php echo((isset($_GET["invalid"])?ValidatedField("userupdate","fldstate"):"".$WADAtbl_directorylistings_update->getColumnVal("fldstate") ."")); ?>
