How do I let the user fill in a time with only hour and minutes?

I want admin to be able to fill in a time in a form. The user should only need to fill in hours and minutes. In DataAssist there is the "Time" type with the possibility to select the format "HH:mm". But how is this stored in the database? What type should the database field have? It doesn't seem to work with "TIME". I get an error message: "There is an error in your SQL syntax." it says.

I'd just use a varchar in the database to save the time.
