Help with Unique Database Value validation

I need to check if an e-mail address already exists in the users table in database.

I've selected 'Unique Database Value' as the server validation, chosen the connection, selected the users table and selected the e-mail field as the 'Unique column' in that table.

Can you clarify what the 'key column' and 'key value' options are for? I understand that they are for update pages, so I'm guessing that the key column should be the ID field for the row. What should the key value be set to?

Also, what should these settings be for an insert table?

Thank you.

They aren't necessary for insert pages. On update pages the ID column should be set to the UserID primary key column and the value should be the logged in user ID from the session, just like the update recordset. This allows you to set the email address to a value that is already in the database as long as it is the current record that is being updated.
