vertical separation on vertical menu but not everywhere

Hi,

What is the procedure to get vertical separations on an horizontal menu but not everywhere.

I take the Webassist footer for example. There are vertical white separations but not on the extreme left OR extreme right.
For example, if the vertical bar is put on the right in MW, we should have a vertical bar at the right of "Site map". same if the bar is put on the left : we should have a vertical bar at the left of "© 1999-2009 WebAssist.com Corporation".

Thank you for your help in advance.

That effect on the footer was not added using MenuWriter, it was hand coded in where needed:
<span class="pipe">|</span>
