on the join links there is

+1 > +!
these can be toggled to 0
i presume this determines the type of join been made, one end as a arrow hEAD PRESUMe thats the DIRection of the join

can you please clarify for me

Yes it is defining if it should return results if the joined table has no rows.

It determines weather to use an INNER JOIN or OUTER JOIN. Where if the linked table has 0+ it will use an OUTER JOIN.
