To get a cart functioning with a page, here are some basic steps to take:
1) Create an eCart Object.
2) Run through the Display Manager.
3) Run through the Checkout Wizard.

Creating the eCart Object will not add anything to the page. It just creates the object that will be used in the later steps of creating your cart. When running through the Display Manager and Checkout Wizard, you will need to specify the eCart Object that you created earlier. After running through these steps, you can apply some add to cart buttons to the pages where you want to add items to the cart.

Could you clarify what part of the process you are on when you are running into this issue?

Static Site

Thank you for replying.I perhaps should have explained that I have a static site and really
only need the dynamics to get the selection from my form to a shopping basket page and then to the payment gateway.I thought that I would be able to do this with e-cart.

The add to cart buttons can be used to add static products to the cart. eCart will build the rest of the cart interface that you are looking for so that it is dynamic.

The page that you apply the cart display will be the first dynamic page that will keep which items you have added to the cart. From there, the checkout will forward you to the checkout page where the user enters their information or chooses the quick checkout if you decided to include it. Next the user is forwarded to a confirm page and if the user confirms the information it is sent to the payment gateway and depending on the results, a transaction success or failure page is the last step.

You said the cart wasn't being added to the page, were you getting any errors when adding to the page? What steps have you taken in the process to add the cart to the page?

You can add an add to cart button that adds a static item to the cart. If you don't have add to cart buttons, you will not be able to add any items to your cart.
