duplicate site for different currencies

Hi Ray

I am wanting to have an identical site as my current site www.dirtymonkeykustoms.ca on a .com domain to be able to run in 2 different currencies. I have looked through the comments here and wanted to make sure i understood correctly what the procedure is and get tips from you.

set up hosting under the .com address.
do a fresh install of the powerstore pkg
create a new fresh database
copy all .ca site files EXCEPT db connection files
download all .ps4 database mysql files form .ca site and upload to .com database
adjust pricing and currency and connection to paypal
... am i missing anything?

Is the only difference the currency, or are you doing different language? Do you want to do it based on an exchange rate? That might be easier than redoing the entire site. You could have the .com go to the same IP address as the .ca and use all of the current site and just adjust prices. I'd probably go that route if possible if you aren't doing an entirely new language.

If you wanted a different price (not based on exchange rate) then you could also just add one more field to the products table to store it and not need to copy the entire site. I'd strongly suggest using a single code base if possible since it will save you a lot of headache in the long run.

I could help you set up either technique in a premier support ticket.

Hi Ray

I wrote a lengthy response to this but it seems to have disappeared.

essentially, I prefer your idea of the single site and a fixed USD and fixed CDN pricing, but it leaves me with some more challenges on marketing, pricing and payments. Our dollar exchange rate is terrible right now and the disparity in pricing and fluctuations would make this challenging

so if we did your method and i changed the site to collect payments in USD, when would the customer see the currency exchange if they are shopping in CDN? at the paypal checkout?

We have customized my store pretty heavy - how difficult would it be to do a duplicate? could i do all the basic work and have you do a premiere ticket to fix up all the connection issues?

how do i find out which version of powerstore i am running?

I am only running in English - no language changes.

If we went with the set USD and Set CDN Pricing method, Is there a selector set at the top of the site somewhere, and then all prices are shown in that currency? aprox how many hours to implement this?

You could have a selector, or just interpret the price based on whether they came to the .ca version of the site or the .com version (perhaps have a link back and forth). Then add the price options in the table and do the associated pricing.

I think we could do it in about 2 hours. Just get both domains pointing to the same IP and same set of files and then set up the first hour. We can get as far as we can and see if there is anything you can do on your own, then do the second hour to clean up any leftover issues.
