MySQLi Recordset ignores new dB fields

MySQLi recordsets do not pickup newly added fields to a database no matter what I try. How do I get a MySQLi recordset to recognize new fields added to MySQL tables? I know I've asked this question last year but I've forgotten the answer or if I ever got an answer.

if the SELECT statement of the recordset uses a list of columns, it won't show any new columns:

SELECT column1, column2, column3 FROM table

if you use an asterisk instead, it will return all columns:
SELECT * FROM table
