What causes "Undefined Index" Errors?

HELP! This MySQLi recordset:

35. <?php
36. $rsSearch = new WA_MySQLi_RS("rsSearch",$icmids,0);
37. $rsSearch->setQuery("SELECT * FROM abstracts WHERE Author = %s OR FileName LIKE %s");
38. $rsSearch->bindParam("text", "".$_GET['Author'] ."", "-1xyz"); //varAuthor
39. $rsSearch->bindParam("text", "".$_GET['FileName'] ."", "-1xyz"); //varFileName
40. $rsSearch->execute();
?>

is giving these errors:

Notice: Undefined index: Author in /Library/WebServer/Documents/ICMIDS/admin_abstracts_edit.php on line 38
Notice: Undefined index: FileName in /Library/WebServer/Documents/ICMIDS/admin_abstracts_edit.php on line 39
Error in SQL syntax

Anyone know what is causing this and how to fix?

undefined index mean the variable you are referencing dos not exist.

the error means that there is no URL variable named Author, or FileName for the recordset to use.

when using URL variables in your recordset, you should use iisset() to check if the variable exists:
38. $rsSearch->bindParam("text", "".(isset($_GET['Author'])?$_GET['Author']:"") ."", "-1xyz"); //varAuthor
39. $rsSearch->bindParam("text", "".(isset($_GET['FileName'])?$_GET['FileName']:"") ."", "-1xyz"); //varFileName
