What does "dot" release mean?

Please excuse my ignorance but what does "dot" release mean? Is this simply a reference to the decimal point?

Jamie

all it is is the next iteration of the current vwersion of a bit of software and refers to the full stop between the version number and the update number

eg version 1.0, 1.1 would be a dot release as its an update of 1.0
version 2.0 would be a new release
