Authorize.net / Credit Card Swipe

My client wants to accept credit cards onsite during a convention. We currently use eCart 4 and Authorize.net and can process credit cards via an admin area I created using eCart. Is there any way to pass a card swipe into Authorize.net or at the least have a card swipe autofill the credit card fields and submit to Authorize.net? I know that we can get a swipe terminal and connect directly to the merchant account, but this would require us to double enter information back into our database such as the transaction code, time/date of transaction, last 4 digits of card number, etc... I would appreciate any thoughts or sharing of experience anyone has on this.
