American Express not taken with paypal

I have eCart 6 and paypal checkout. All of a sudden valid American Express cards are being rejected. Paypal says no issue on their side and that it might be in my software. How do I check?

add the following code on the failure page:

this will write the session contents including the response form the gateway. the gateway response will have details on why the transaction failed.
