Resize by proportion background color. Can I set it?

Hi, I have an instance of the Image Resizer working beautifully but when it resizes an image that is smaller (to maintain proportion) the result is the smaller image centered horizontally and vertically on top of a colored background. Sometimes the background is black but other times it is purple. I can not figure out why the color difference and would love to be able to set the color of the background to a white or grey instead, if possible. Is there a way to do this? Thanks for all ideas!
