How do I get my email tokens to work?

How do I get my email tokens to work?

When I select User First name for placement onto one of the provided templates, the 'Send Preview' yields that field being displayed on the email message with a value as: " *:UserFirstName:* "

The emaiul tokens do not appear to be working. How do I make them work?

The tokens will not work properly in the email preview, they will only work properly when sending the email for real.

The send preview option does not have an associated user, so there is no UserFirstName value available.
