Multiple Domains On One Hosting Account - Effect SEO?

Multiple Domains On One Hosting Account - Effect SEO?

Does it effect search engine rankings or listings if you have more than one domain hosting on the same account? For example, say I have 5 completely different sites all hosted on a shared account at hostgator, the main domain on the account was maindomain.com and each other site had it's own domain. However, you know how when you do that, it will setup the seconddomain.com and it will also be seconddomain.maindomain.com as well. That shows up in google if you search for the site etc. and I was wondering does this effect listings on search engines, is it harder to get placed? Is there any way of getting around it on one account or should I just have multiple accounts? I know search engines list you partly based on content and keywords, so google might think all the sites that also show up on a subdomain of maindomain.com may not have relevant content and are just very random. Does this make sense? Hopefully someone knows. Thanks.

I think I understand just what you are saying, I have a hosted account like this as well, but I'm not trying to get mine to be SEO friendly.

I can see how if the secondary domains are related to your main domain through the subdomain access URLs. Do you know if your host gives you the ability to disable this subdomain that is created for the shared accounts? This is where you should start, I think it would be best to have domains and subdomains that pertain to the particular site only. I'm not an SEO expert by any means but I do see how the content of your domain may be confused if the sub domains like this are being indexed along with your main domain.

Anyone else out here in the forums have any experience with this?

1. Yes, if they are sharing the same IP address it is very easy for the folks at Google to see what you are doing, especially if you are cross linking...not good.

2. The issue you are having is big in terms of being bad for site relevancy and duplicate content issues.

3. Here is my suggestion. Use www.pair.com developer account, set up each site in its own sub-folder in your www directory within your pair account. Then spend the extra 5 bucks to buy a dedicated IP address from pair for each site.

There are other, more complex ways of doing things with different IP's, multiple c-class's, but generally Pair's solution is good enough unless you are doing really spammy things.

Multiple domains under on plan GOOD or BAD for SEO

Add-on domains are one you can consider without worrying about negative seo implications. Although added-on domains exist within sub-directories of the account domain, in all practical terms they are completely self-contained and appear to search engine bots and users alike as no different to individually hosted sites.

I personally used to use the add-on domains feature of Cpanel and never found reason to be concerned over how added-on sites appear to se bots or users.
However, as my domains have grown in number and those domains have in turn become active websites, I felt it was better to 'trade up' to a reseller account as it gave me greater overview as well as greater direct control over every aspect of each domain/site.
(Certain control panel features and facilities aren't individually available to added-on domains.)

Reseller accounts can be bought for reasonably low amounts now and if you have any intentions on managing/overseeing a number of your own or client sites, I would certainly recommend that you track down an entry level reseller account.
Having access to a control panel for each active domain makes managing each domain considerably simpler. It also helps to keep each domain's directories less cluttered and more manageable as you're no longer adding sub-directories for every side-project and client's site, as is generally the case when relying on add-on domains.

Of course it affects the SEO..
since using multiple domain in single host have the same IP address, the method followed by SEO techniques like link building will have a major draw back.

SEO Hosting allows you to host multiple domains, all from one control panel (WHM) and assign unique c-class ip's to each domain for extra SEO benefits.

@ everyone who've replied on this thread. I have noticed that everyone here is just concerned about IP address while hosting multiple domains over a single hosting account. Though I am also not a SEO expert.. but over the course of time I have learnt that as a matter of fact - Search Engines do not rank websites..!!!! They rank web pages :) Thus for a given keyword SE bots / crawlers look for meta tags and scan the content of webpage. And the relation of the keyword to the available pages over the internet are indexed in the form of "Page Ranking" not the website ranking.

When we ask for result from a Search Engine by providing keywords then indexed / cached web pages are displayed in order of the page ranking in SE's result page, which is determined by the bots ascertaining the relevance. So to the extent of my knowledge page content is much more relevant and it over rules the aforesaid effect due to shared IP or different domain names. Though external linking is altogether a separate issue to be addressed while talking SEO which could even happen when domains are hosted on different hosting accounts. And I believe that hosting multiple domains on one hosting account is not bad at all indeed, rather cost effective. Corrections are warmly welcomed :)

hosting multiple domains. will it affect seo?

Hey all,

I use fastdomain for hosting one of my websites. One of the features they offer is to host multiple domains on one hosting account. The way they do this is through adding each additional website through a subfolder.

My question is if I do this will it affect SEO in anyway.
-Will it affect the primary domain?
-Will it make it harder to rank for the new domain that is in the subfolder?
-What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?

Thanks for your comments.
