Multiple Domains On One Hosting Account - Effect SEO?

Multiple Domains On One Hosting Account - Effect SEO?

Does it effect search engine rankings or listings if you have more than one domain hosting on the same account? For example, say I have 5 completely different sites all hosted on a shared account at hostgator, the main domain on the account was maindomain.com and each other site had it's own domain. However, you know how when you do that, it will setup the seconddomain.com and it will also be seconddomain.maindomain.com as well. That shows up in google if you search for the site etc. and I was wondering does this effect listings on search engines, is it harder to get placed? Is there any way of getting around it on one account or should I just have multiple accounts? I know search engines list you partly based on content and keywords, so google might think all the sites that also show up on a subdomain of maindomain.com may not have relevant content and are just very random. Does this make sense? Hopefully someone knows. Thanks.

I think I understand just what you are saying, I have a hosted account like this as well, but I'm not trying to get mine to be SEO friendly.

I can see how if the secondary domains are related to your main domain through the subdomain access URLs. Do you know if your host gives you the ability to disable this subdomain that is created for the shared accounts? This is where you should start, I think it would be best to have domains and subdomains that pertain to the particular site only. I'm not an SEO expert by any means but I do see how the content of your domain may be confused if the sub domains like this are being indexed along with your main domain.

Anyone else out here in the forums have any experience with this?

@ everyone who've replied on this thread. I have noticed that everyone here is just concerned about IP address while hosting multiple domains over a single hosting account. Though I am also not a SEO expert.. but over the course of time I have learnt that as a matter of fact - Search Engines do not rank websites..!!!! They rank web pages :) Thus for a given keyword SE bots / crawlers look for meta tags and scan the content of webpage. And the relation of the keyword to the available pages over the internet are indexed in the form of "Page Ranking" not the website ranking.

When we ask for result from a Search Engine by providing keywords then indexed / cached web pages are displayed in order of the page ranking in SE's result page, which is determined by the bots ascertaining the relevance. So to the extent of my knowledge page content is much more relevant and it over rules the aforesaid effect due to shared IP or different domain names. Though external linking is altogether a separate issue to be addressed while talking SEO which could even happen when domains are hosted on different hosting accounts. And I believe that hosting multiple domains on one hosting account is not bad at all indeed, rather cost effective. Corrections are warmly welcomed :)

hosting multiple domains. will it affect seo?

Hey all,

I use fastdomain for hosting one of my websites. One of the features they offer is to host multiple domains on one hosting account. The way they do this is through adding each additional website through a subfolder.

My question is if I do this will it affect SEO in anyway.
-Will it affect the primary domain?
-Will it make it harder to rank for the new domain that is in the subfolder?
-What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing this?

Thanks for your comments.
