Showing part of a text area field on a results page

Just wondering if its possible to show part of a field (eg first 100 characters) on a results page?

Basically for a homepage that lists the most recent couple of news stories, so would be handy to include the start of the story in the way that blogs have the start of the blog before clicking through to the full blog.
