ecart rules for a category present in the cart.

Hi in the ecart rules box there is the trigger "Presence of an item in the cart", so this would be used to see if a product item is in the cart....could this also work for "categories" so if I store the category rather then a product I be able to give a discount to any items that belong to a certain category whereupon the category ID is stored in a session?
