installing Design Extender and lose modifications to CSS Menuwriter

Before installing Design Extender the instructions say to uninstall program we already have. When you go to do this you get a warning from DW. It says "you will lose modifications if you continue".

Since I have a couple of years of modifications to CSS Menuwriter...this would be a bad thing. It does say something about "packaging the extension" but I haven't seen how to do that or what it even is.

So...my $200 upgrade investment...just sitting there. Don't know what to do. Help please..thanks.

Open the web assist preset manager to export any CSS Menu writer presets you have created.

you can import them to Design Extender after you install design extender

installing Design Extender and lose modifications to CSS Menuwriter 2

Jason, thanks for trying to assist me.
I followed your directions I thought to the letter.
I opened the preset manager...but the directions for exporting were not clear to me. Yes I could guess what I need to do...but prefer not to guess wrong as you can imagine.

So I did the basics...set up a file to receive the presets...then seselected all the presets...hit the export button...navigated to my file and nothing.

Was I supposed to copy then export? Not really clear to me.

Thanks for any light you can shine on this for me...very much appreciated.

Go to insert -> WebAssist -> Preset Manager. In the preset manager select the Menu writer design or Menu Writer contents category, select a design or category button, then click the export button. A window should open asking where you want to the export to. A zip file will be created for the design or content you exported. repeat this for each design.

once you install design extender, you can import the designs.

design extender zip files importing

Jason, thanks for your help with design extender and exporting the css menu files. The mistake I made was trying to do them all at once. One at a time though tedious gets the job done.

After I install design extender I will need to import them back (since I have to delete the originals prior to the downloading design extender). So I just import them back in their current state (zipped)? When they get back into Dreamweaver via that import button in the preset manager I just unzip them and I'm ready to go? Also...I guess that the import is one file at a time as well?

Just making sure I have a plan before I wipe these other files out. Slightly nervous about doing this.

Thanks Jason. Your help is greatly appreciated.

In the preset manager, change the product list to CSS Menu writer Designs then click the import button to select the design zip files you exported, then set the product list to CSS Menu writer contents to import any contents presets you exported.

after you finish importing them, they will be in the preset list for you to use when creating a new menu.

Lost me with CSS Menu writer Designs

Hi Jason,

I must be a lost cause. I have my $200 upgrade still sitting out there. And it's apparently going to sit out there some more.... because I have no idea what this means from your last post..."change the product list to CSS Menu writer Designs."

Huh??? I have Css Menu Writer - Menu Contents and Css Menu Writer - Menu Themes which I have exported to a file for safe keeping. To bring them back I thought just import them...but alas now we have Css Menu writer Designs...which I don't see anywhere in the WebAssist Preset Manager.

I have to tell you I really feel stupid at this point. I really hope no one else is reading this thread...it really is embarrassing. Jason, please help...what and where is the Css Menu Writer Designs. I don't see it, this is the first I've heard of it. Just glad I haven't wiped anything out yet.

I used the wrong terminology, by css menu writer designs, i meant themes.

design extender - don't unzip the files outside of the Preset Manager

Hi Jason, thanks for that last clarification.

Last on this....I did a little test...I noticed that you can import the files back in as zipped files, and they look like they did before.

But...if for some reason you should unzip them (like I did to one test file) it looks like you can't bring the file back. Not a big deal but I was wondering why this is the case? This might be good information for others like me.

Jason thanks for your help...in the end it all looks pretty easy so you must be scratching you head saying "what is wrong with this guy". Well nothing really...just have a lot of work that I've already done, and can't afford to lose. This is why all the extra checks.

Again...really appreciate you assistance with this.
