Custom Shipping Charges w/ eCart

Custom Shipping Charges w/ eCart

We ship a number of large-sized packages from our online store. These packages incur additional handling charges from UPS that do not show up in the automatic shipping quotes provided in PS3 by the UPS API. We own eCart 5, and would like to add a custom shipping charge to our store on a per-item basis.

Ideally, we would like to add a checkbox or field to the item update page in the Admin section, so that our staff can enable these additional handling fees only for the items that require it.

Any ideas about how to get started doing this?

Many thanks.

Peder M.

If you are using power store 4, you dont need to create any custom shipping rules.

When editing a product, go to the Additional settings tab. you can specify an item shipping rate here.

We're on PowerStore 3 and haven't switched yet because of the amount of customization that would have to be duplicated. Can we achieve this using eCart, or do we have to upgrade?

it would require quite a bit of work to do this using ecart, and this modification would not be supported.

you would need to add a new column to the products table to set the additional shipping amount.

you would need to edit the products insert and update page to add new form fields for the additional shipping amount.

then use data assist to update the Insert Record and update record behaiovors to store the new shipping amount in the products table.

next edit the eCart object to create a new column named "shippingAmount".

also create a shipingTotal calculation as:
[shippingAmount] * [Quantity]

Next update the eCart Add to Cart button behavior on the products detail page, bind the shippingAmount cart column to the new shipping amount column in the products recordset.

then edit the ecart object again to set a new shipping rule to use the subtotal of shipingTotal calculation.

honestly, it would be simpler to upgrade to PS4.
