Power Gallery 1.0

Power Gallery 1.0

I have an earlier version of Power Gallery which was working fine until yesterday. I have not created or updated my various galleries for a few months.

I tried creating a new gallery and that part went okay. The problem showed up when I uploaded an image and then went to "Manage Images". Instead of getting a picture I get a blank thumbnail with a ? in the centre. I checked the folder in my directory on the server and the file was there in a folder.

I tried deleting the gallery through Power Gallery Admin and started over. Same result, no pictures for the thumbnails and if I try to preview the gallery nothing loads.

The strange part of this is that I did manage to create a gallery once in my many attempts and place a picture in it. That worked but then I could not add anything further.

I have not done anything as far as I know with my server or the Power Gallery software so I am at a loss as find what is causing the problem and a fix.

Do you have a url where I can see the problem? It doesn't sound like an issue I'm familiar with, but perhaps I can diagnose it with access to the site to investigate further.

Manage Images

The website is www.lookylou.com

At the moment the problem gallery is not active, however there are several that are working just fine.

The last gallery I added has this path within the site

PowerGallery100/Images/17

The URL for the Admin Page where you can see what happens is

manageimages.php

It looks like a file permissions issue.

when I try to view an image I get an error:

<p>You don't have permission to access /PowerGallery100/images/17/DSCN1142_782p.jpg
on this server.</p>

File Permissions

Is this something that needs to be resolved by the hosting company, or do I have to do something in Power Gallery?

Does the file exist in that location? It is probably a file permissions issue that you could solve with the hosting provider's interface. You may be able to do it without actually contacting them, but it is something that would have to be resolved on the server.

Problem may be solved

I contacted the host provider and we reset the permissions, although they told me everything looked normal. However, the problem still exists sometimes. The web host thought there might be an issue with my internet service provider so I will have to check that out. I switched service companies when I moved and the problem showed up after that change.

Thanks for your help, it seems the problem is not with your software but somewhere else.

One more thing

Ray,

Before I go off after the host provider I just need to understand something about the Power Gallery admin. As I understand this is a web service and the program is actually running on my host's server. If that is true then when I upload a picture, the admin program must be running a script or something to generate the thumbnails and other things the gallery uses.

So, is the issue of the slow upload or missing thumbnails a problem with the script running on the host server. I can't see how it can be a problem with my computer although it may be a problem with my internet service provider.

Please clarify if my thought process is right before I chase this down any further.

Does the file exist in that location?

It would be an issue with your hosting provider if the file exists at that location but you can't view it.

It can't be a problem with your computer, and I see the problem too so it isn't a problem with your isp. Did you confirm that there is an image in that location.

Talk to your Hosting Provider support. Make it clear that a file exists at that location and send them the link to verify that they cannot browse to it either. I don't think they can pass the buck at that point.

Problem may be with WA script

I had Netwwork Solutions check into my problem further and they could not find an issue at their end. They did suggest using umask to specify the permissions level.

However before doing that I decided to try something else. Up to this point I had been trying to add files without a title or description. That process failed to work more often than not.

I decided to try uploading one more time and this time I entered some text into the "Title" area. Lo and behold, the file uploaded and displayed properly. I tried this several more times and had success every time. Just to see if I had found the problem for certain, I tried uploading a file again with any information in the title box. The upload failed.

I have to assume at this point there is something in one of the WA php scripts running on the server that causes a problem if no information is entered into the Title area. It doesn't appear to matter whether anything is in the Description box, but the process fails almost 100% of the time if nothing is entered into the title box. Typically the program just hangs and displays the message "processing image 1 of 1". If it ever completes the process (rarely) there is a blank thumbnail, however the picture is in my folder on the server, just doesn't show in the Power Gallery admin panel.

In the past I believe I always entered something into the Title and Description area's which may account for why I never had this problem previously.
