Products display in Sub categories but not in main categories

I have a car audio website with a few categories like

Subwooofers
....12" subwoofers
....15" subwoofers

Speakers
.... 6 x 9 speakers
.... 6.5" speakers

etc etc etc

When I click on the individual sub categories like 12" subwoofers i see the 12" subwoofers just fine.

When i click on the main plain "subwoofers" category it says no results.

how do i get clicking on the main categories to display all the items in the sub categories as well?

you need to associate the product to the main category as well as the sub category.

When selecting the categories that the product belongs to select the main category, then hold down the Alt key (Command Key for Mac) while selecting the subcategory.
