Data Assist and Templates

I worked through the getting started guide yesterday without using a template and all was fine. Today I was trying to use a .dwt template and none of the WADApage___ divs are working. They appear in the <body>, but they aren't created in the <style> section of the code and therefore don't work.
Where are they supposed to be?

On the first step of the data assist wizard, where you select the template, you also select the editable region that will be used.
