Web Developer Suite question

Web Developer Suite question

Hi,

I’m considering taking advantage of Summer Sale to purchase Web Developer Suite, but I would like to know just how extensive Web Developer Suite can really go and help development in terms of the level of web sites it can develop. For example, can I develop something like these using Web Developer Suite:

* A content management system works similar to Joomla CMS or WordPress but no plug-in architecture
* A bulletin board system similar to phpBB
* A travel reservation site with a complete backend, multiple admin user accounts with multiple access levels for each account type
* Web-based CRM/Project management solutions similar to 37Signals.com (online collaborative calendar & contact)
* An online school system where you can manage students, forums, etc.

Basically I want to create a simpler/customized variant of those open source packages to meet clients' specific requests. I've tried patching and hacking those packages to avoid reinventing the wheels but it's troublesome in a long run and figured it would be worth building a custom solution in some cases. Can Web Developer Suite help with that?

I've also seen a post somewhere in the forum in the past mentioning DataAssist doesn't support Unicode and therefore unable to use Japanese, Chinese, etc. Is that true? Any workaround for that?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Web Developer Suite will help you in parts of the implementation of just about any complex web application with database back end. All of the things you describe fit into that category, so the tools would help. However you would have to be able to conceptualize the database and put together the tools in a meaningful way in order to accomplish those results along with some amount of hand coding and using other tools. At the end of the day it would require a rich understanding of Dreamweaver and web technology in general along with an in depth knowledge of the tools in order to pull off everything you describe.

DataAssist does support unicode, or it should be simple enough to add if it doesn't. Just post back here if you run into problems or issues. Most likely the problem was with the charset setting on the page or some other configuration setting causing issues with the forum post you are referring to. Without a specific link I of course can't be sure of the precise issue.

RE:

I think I found the post I was talking about:

showthread.php?t=1134

Reading it again now, maybe he was referring to a default setting and not necessarily inability to handle UTF-8.

Well, I don't have problems with all that (the procedure being extensive like you described) so long as Web Developer Suite does indeed save a lot of time in the process. I would purchase it if it can significantly reduce the development time and effort compared to not using it, assuming all the other requirements you mentioned (conceptualizing database structure, some handcoding tweaks, etc.) are met.

Verdict?

At least Web Developer Suite can create a web version of something I would make in, say, FileMaker Pro, correct? For this additional questions, I'm talking about putting together an editable address book database with multiple users with multiple editing privileges.

You would use a mySQL database and a PHP web server. FileMaker Pro would not be a good choice.

I think someone experienced with dreamweaver, our tools, and the technology involved would be able to create an address book with user login and privilages.

Minimally the tools involved would be Security Assist, Validation Toolkit, DataAssist, and probably Universal Email... you may also use CSS Sculptor and CSS menu writer on the design side to speed things up even more.

Keep up with good works!!

Well, I bit the bullet and bought the Web Developer Suite via the summer sale. I would like to say it is SO worth the price!! I can definitely see these extensions will help me save ridiculous amount of time and effort just like CSS Menu Master and CSS Sculptor already have (I use both and they've been incredibly useful). I'm quite impressed by what these extensions can really do so quickly, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see all sorts of support files that help me customize output to the core. The suite contains more stuff than I initially thought. Way cool!

I'm definitely glad I bought the suite! Keep up with good works!

Suites are compilations of products. All of the products in the suite you purchased are still listed products, we just no longer sell them in that particular package. Nothing to worry about.
