making the navigation div transparent

making the navigation div transparent

I have managed to use CSS builder and menu writer to generate a reasonable webpage design, however, the CSS designs include a horizontal navigation div. in which to place the horizontal menu. The horizontal div goes all the way across the page.

I placed the menu in the div and it works ok but because the navigation bar is smaller than the navigation div(which goes all the way across the page) the background colour of the div shows through. This spoils the design.

I adjusted the top and bottom edges of the menu bar but that doesnt completly solve the problem because of the the width of the extra div
I can adjust the colour of the div to match some of the other elements but it still leaves bits of the design looking a little odd
How do I solve this problem?

Is there any way of making the navigation div transparent so the other colours/designs show through?
Alternatively how can I adjust the navigation div the precisely fit the menu dimensions?

or is there a way of deleting the navigation div and placing the menu in the header?

In a nutshell,I would like to be able to place the menu bar so that it simply lays ontop of the other elements and doesn't interfere with the rest of the design?
hope I'm making myself clear?

please help as I have a feeling that once I get the hang of these tools they could be fairly useful re saving time?
