ERROR: Database could not be created

I get the following error on stage 2 of the installation/configuration. Can anybody suggest what I need to do to correct and move forward?

ERROR: Database could not be created.

You have an error in your SQL syntax. Check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8' at line 10

Thanks.

What version of mySQL and what version of PHP do you have installed? Most likely you will need either a newer version of mySQL or PHP in order to get it to work properly.
