Newbie eCart Set Up Error

Hi
I set up Ecart with no mods and with-out a payment gateway just to test.
The preview page reads, 'this cart is empty' in blue text next to an add to cart button.
I removed the pages and scripts to run the same set up again and added a thumbnail to no avail. Has anyone experienced this before and can help?

unless the cart has something in it, you will get that message

the cart display is in a block which begins

//WA eCart Show If Start

have you tried opening the cart page after adding an item ?
