if yes, text field or text area required

I am struggling with something I think is very simple but I can't seem to find the right answers to the problem and how to implement them.

I have two sets of Yes and No radio buttons on my form, and for the first one, if Yes is clicked the user is required to fill in a text field.

For the second set of radio buttons, if Yes is clicked the user is required to fill in a textarea.

How do I make sure the textfield in one and the textarea in the second set is filled in before the form sends?

Please advise.

you could use code similar to that used in ecart.

check for a form 'submit' button being pressed.

if true, check for the radio button value.

if radio = yes, do the validation check,

if ok, process the form
if not ok, display a message

if radio = no, process the form
