"Validation Show If" problem

"Validation Show If" problem

When I try to install the Validation Show If behavior to a phrase as described in your help file "How to Apply CSS styles to form elements with Validation Toolkit?", Dreamweaver gives me the following message: "Making this change would require changing code that is locked by a template or a translator. The change will be discarded."

Any suggestions?

Cal

it seems like you are editing a page based on a template.

Ensure that the cursor is in an editable area of the page when you try to add the server behavior and it should work ok.

Still need help...

The cursor (and the form to which the validation is supposed to be applied) is in an editable region. I am now getting the following message: "You have made changes to code that is not marked as editable. If you retain those changes, they will be lost the next time you apply a template update to this file, Do you want to retain the changes until then?"

That will be a problem (if true) in the future when I change the template (as I will need to do).

Also, in testing the form I notice that if one of the validations does not pass the whole form comes back blank (to start all over again). Is there a way to preserve the valid data so the user doesn't have to start all over again?

Thanks,

Cal

As long as the areas in which you are making changes are within the editable regions of your template, you should be ok.

for example within the content div...

<div id="content"><!-- InstanceBeginEditable name="content" -->

Lorum ipsum etc

<!-- InstanceEndEditable -->
</div>

Also ensure that the head section of your page is editable too.

I occasionally get the error message you refer to, even when there is nothing wrong.

When you refer to your validation, i presume you want the fields which have been correctly completed to retain their values.

there are a couple of ways to do this, either by passing the post variables back into the form, or creating a session variable for each field you want to retain the value, and passing these values back into the form.

in dreamweaver, in your text field properties, set the init val using one of these methods.

hope this helps

The error you are getting is a common one when working with templates in Dreamweaver.

There is no solid fix for the issue, but I have discovered a workaround. See the following thread for details:
