Sub category items duplicated in main drop down menu

Sub category items duplicated in main drop down menu

I have created two sub categories (General Fiction and Historical Fiction) for the main category Fiction & Literature. While these two sub categories display correctly in the left hand category menu, i.e. as sub categories of Fiction & Literature, they are duplicated in the main drop down menu.

The subcategories appear in Level 1 of the product drop down menu in exactly the same way as a category does. However, they are also duplicated in Level 2 of the menu as sub categories of Fiction and Literature. It’s this second method of display I want to achieve, i.e. these two subcategories not appearing in L1 of the menu but appearing in L2 only - as, in my opinion, they should do.

Hoping you can help me sort this out, otherwise my L1 menu is just going to get bigger and bigger! Thanks in advance for all help.

Do you have a url where I can see this behavior?

Have you made any changes to any of the database queries in the pages?

Hello Jimmy,

Sorry, same reply as last night - I don't have a live site just a site under development on my test server (XAMPP) which is on my PC. However, I can be reached on +44 (0)1524 427427 until 2.00pm your time if you want to speak to me.

In the meantime, the best I can do is the 3 images I sent you. While these are not live, I do think they clearly show what's happening with the menu.

Since I made my original post, I have discovered that if you click on either of the 2 sub categories (General Fiction and Historical Fiction) on L2 of the main menu, the following error message appears:

Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. The link on the referring page seems to be wrong or outdated. Please inform the author of that page about the error.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

Error 404

localhost

Apache/2.2.14 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8l mod_autoindex_color PHP/5.3.1 mod_apreq2-20090110/2.7.1 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.10.1

However, if you click on these two items in the left hand category menu, the search is performed OK and there is no error message.

As to "have I made any changes to any of the database queries", I wouldn't know how!

Sorry, I couldn't be more helpful, Jimmy, looking forward to your reply.

Hello Jimmy,

I 've bitten the bullet and now uploaded PS3 to my live (remote) server and will use the local server to update and change files as I need to.

The interesting thing, from my point of view, is that viewing PS3 on a live server seems totally different from viewing it on a local server. Or it certainly is in my case.

For example, since putting the categories into the store through admin on the live server, I no longer have this problem of categories duplicating themselves and all search links function OK.

Also, the problem I experienced with the menu - L1 overlapping L2 - does not happen when the site is live. Just as you predicted.

Why there should be these marked differences I couldn't even begin to guess. Anyway, things now seem to be sorting themselves out, so fingers crossed that I won't need to disturb you and your colleagues too much in the future. Thanks.

Well, it seems like good news that at least on the live server the site seems to be working. If you run into any other issues that need to be looked at, please feel free to open a new thread.
