digital download center using free paypal

OK, a client of mine wants to use the free version of paypal. She wants a digital download center, and I just read the support pdfs of how to do it and also make an order history/login page.

My question is, would this work with the free version of paypal? If so, what is the best way to go about it.

I'm assuming that once you actually go through the checkout process, and go back to the site, your digital download area would be open and you could download the files from that page with no trouble.

The biggest limitation to PayPal Payments Standard is that transactions are not processed in real time.

When the customer goes through the checkout process with Paypal standard and get to the Checkout success, this only means that paypal has accepted the payment information. the transaction has been placed in a queue and will be processed on a first come first served basis. The transaction may be processed in as little as 5 minutes, or as long as 5 days.

Once the transaction has been processed with the bank, or credit card company, payPal will either email you or you can set it up to do an IPN post to let you know if the transaction was truly successful, or if it failed.

because of this, it becomes very difficult to deliver digital goods using PayPal standard. people expect to be able to download digital goods immediately, but you have now way of knowing the status of the transaction immediately when using PayPal standard.

Is there any difference between the "Standard Paypal" and the "Business Paypal" when having a digital store, or is my client going to have to spend the $30 a month for the "Pro" Version of paypal to do a digital store?

My Understanding is that a "Standard" PayPal account is just a buyer account. You have to have a "Business" Account to be a seller. The "Business" account will allow you to sign up for PayPal Payments Standard services, or you can upgrade to a "Merchant" which will allow you to sign up for PayPal Payments Pro
