all for processing must occur on the forms action page.

If the universal Email behavior is on the same page with the form, then the forms action should be left blank so that it will post to itself.

You say:

UE redirect to the action page after the emails trigger I lose my session variables

where are you setting those sessions?

Can you send a copy of the UE page and the thank page so I can see the code.
