PS3 - When changing Options the SKU does not update

Is there a way to have the SKU shown on the Product Detail Page and the Cart page?

For the options each ProductSKU is completely different. I'm able to update a new ProductSKU for each option okay, but it doesn't show.

We may have a strange implementation of the options. Take for example this product:

Products_Detail.php?ProductID=723

There are 12 different options of the product because the product is the same except for the size.

However the size of the product is the most important and it's how the warehouse pulls the product.

I need to show the user the exact product SKU to make sure it matches the catalog and also and most important the warehouse on the receipt needs to see the correct ProductSKU to make sure they ship the correct product.

What are your thoughts on this.

I understand after looking at the code and the db. When you create a new option and change the ProductSKU it creates a new product in the products table.

I'm wondering if I may be using the option (option) incorrectly and there's a better?

The way the customer buys the product is based on the type of product #8 wood screw and then by the size of the screw.

What I don't want to do is create a new product for each option.

Your thoughts?
