Pay Pay checkout "error your cart is empty"

When doing a test with a static test product and order process I get to the point of checking out with payPay. the paypal page says "error your cart is empty". But there are items in the cart before going to the pay pal gate way.

Also when initially adding an item to the cart, the add to cart button has to be clicked twice before going to the cart page....

For a extension that is supposed to make things easier there sure is a lot of troubleshooting to get things working. It's not very intuitive. After reading through a following the step by step quick start guide, there is no mention of redirecting from the page with the add to cart button to the cart page.
